Our Park Connector Network (PCN) is a well-planned network of green corridors which links parks and nature areas across Singapore. It was created to provide green spaces to residents amidst the backdrop of urban areas. It is easily accessible, making its way to most neighbourhoods within a 5-minute walk. It has provided Singapore residents with spaces for recreational activities and exercise. For me, I appreciate the beautiful trees which line both sides of the PCN. It has been my go to area for exercise or just for a leisurely stroll.
With its ample greenery, the PCN also provides a safe space for our wildlife. It is common to see animals and birds, providing a refreshing view of wildlife on offer in urban Singapore without having to visit the zoo or nature reserves.
One of the wildlife which is commonly sighted are otters. Otters have been sighted at various parks and park connectors, including at my very own neighbourhood PCN, Alexandra PCN. It probably made its way from the mouth of Singapore river as it has been sighted at Robertson Quay too. The family of otters below were spotted at the Tanglin Road area of Alexandra PCN. It is definitely a sight to behold, with the passers-by taking videos and photographs generously. However, it might pose a risk to members of the public. Scenarios of them attacking people who pass by the area unknowingly cannot be ruled out.
Anyway, it seems that NParks is taking steps to relocate some family of otters to more suitable places. If implemented carefully, it should allay the concerns of the public, ensuring not only the safety of the public, but of the otters as well. Hopefully, it will be a win-win situation for both the public and the otters.
Otters are not the only wildlife at Alexandra PCN. It attracts birds which come here to seek shelter or to find food.
This hornbill was spotted at the Dawson section of Alexandra PCN.
Here's to our Park Connector Network. An area for recreational activities, exercise and social bonding which is filled with a treasure trove of findings.
